Design and Marketing with purpose.

I’ve been lucky to work in the design and marketing world since 1997.

I’ve worked for myself, and with various design, marketing and advertising agencies in the UK for lots of different clients. Some small, some startups, some significant national and international brands.

But the work that I tend to lose myself in is usually the work that has a useful social purpose. As a Junior Designer starting out in 1997, the charity projects were always offered to me, while more senior creatives worked on the blue-chip stuff.

I was hungry to do the work, to show to the Creative Director and my peers that I could cut the proverbial mustard, and put time, effort and purpose into these projects. They were only small clients, but they felt like a big deal at the time.

It wasn’t until I was working freelance, many years later for an advertising agency whose client was sapping my soul. Long days. A high-profile vacuous business, who paid little tax, and didn’t seem to be giving anything back to society.

And those charity projects I worked on, back in the day, started to matter a lot more to me. So I took on more projects and clients that had a purpose. Some value. Some inspiration. Using the corporate marketing skills I had honed, to do some good.

I now work full time, for a non-profit that gives all of its profits to charity. Out of work I donate my time to one charity a year to help them with branding, design and marketing.

It gives me purpose. For a good purpose.

Does your project have purpose?

I do free work every year for a few projects with purpose. Does your project or charity need design and marketing assistance?
